Channel Four are to run a documentary on Beccles public house the 'Bear & Bells'. The viewing will be in the spring of 2006 and follows the first year of the landlords David and Kevin, whilst they adapt to their new lifestyle having taken the helm upon moving from London. The documentary will be presented by host Gaby Roslin.
We wish both David and Kevin well, understanding that they have found life possibly a bit harder than expected, but safe in the knowledge they are doing a superb job.

Beccles mourns local singer

DEREK DRIVER RIP
It with great sadness that I bring the news that top local vocalist Derek Driver (from Beccles) passed away on the Friday 6th May.
Derek began singing back in 1966 for the 'Alex Wilson Set'. The groups’ popularity saw them secure many of the areas big support slots backing Graham Bond, Mannfred Mann, Edwin Starr, The Pretty Things, The Cream, The Merseybeats & The Who.
On one of the rare visits of Pink Floyd to East Anglia ( The Floral Hall in Gorleston) 'The Set' had to retake the stage at the end of the night to pacify a very disgruntled audience, make of that what you will.
In late 1969 with a few minor line-up changes the group became 'Kiss' The supports kept coming with The Moody Blues, Chris Farlowe, Amen Corner & The Hollies amongst their credits.
It was in late 1969 that Derek decided to retire but his farewell performance was met with hysteria and some of the audience even wept and would not let Derek leave the stage.
Derek later sang with the Trevor Copeman band as did many top local vocalists as Trevor was renowned for only choosing the best and Derek Driver was the best.
On the 8th of April 2005 Derek married his sweetheart Culzean in St Lucia.
The news was greeted with great sadness by all the members of The Alex Wilson Set and Kiss who had recently got together to feature in an Anglia TV documentary about the group. (The Way We Were - 29/1/04)
Derek’s Funeral will take place at The Hungate Methodist Church on Tuesday 17th May 2005 at 2-15 pm
Thanks to Kingsley Harris from East Anglian Music Archive who supplied much of the above information

Tony managed the group “Alex Wilson Set” and ‘Kiss’ and has since kept the group in-touch with each other and was a close friend to Derek

Beccles Caravan Prank
|
|
Pranksters who unhitched a caravan from its car in the town could have caused a serious problem.
The caravan was parted from a Peugeot car parked at the Old Market public toilets and left to roll down a hill. The caravan hit a parked Renault Clio causing some damage, but police say this could have been a much more serious issue.

Trade Scheme at Beccles
|
|
Initial ideas are being discussed to reward shoppers for loyalty in Beccles. The Beccles Market Town Initiative project team are looking at ideas that would encourage people to continue or improve their buying in the town.
We think this could be a wonderful idea, so many towns have suffered by out of area shopping. Beccles is an excellent town, lets all preserve it, we have some quality traders at present and with such a scheme the town could prosper.
