Bird Watching, Nature Reserves

Nature Reserves are a dominant part of the local landscape, the sea shore area of Benacre has an adjacent bird sanctuary that is quite private and unique, where both sea birds and marshland varieties may be found.

The splendid 'Minsmere' Reserve is but a short drive away, and time permitting one may spend a day here just absorbing the enormous variety, sounds, and scenery. You may also be inclined to visit the woods of 'Dunwich', walks apart, there are many birds and wildlife found inhabiting the area.

Beccles Marshes Trail

The Beccles Marsh Trail may be commenced from the large 'Beccles by-pass bridge'. Walking under the bridge towards Aldeby on the Suffolk bank will soon fill you with a sense of relaxation and wondar.
We decided to take this venture on a sunny spring morning before breakfast. The variety of wild birds singing to their hearts content, and the sheer calm of the River waters were a joy. You will pass the sailing club headquarters, and soon find that the trail has a number of alternative routes, it is up to you which to take.
Young Rabbits dancing in a meadow, small calves and sheep watched as we passed by, a Heron drifted overhead. The trail took about 1 hour, but depends on the path you take.

Carlton Colville Marshes

This grazing 'Marsh and Fen' is accessed by the Waveney Way footpath, it has a number of small creatures of interest. The Marsh is warden controlled, and parties of 10 or more should book in advance. Tel; 01502 564250.

Cove Hithe Church / Cliffs & Benacre Broad

On coastal side of Wrentham, Cove Hithe is a small hamlet almost at the cliff edge. Parking near to the old church the first thing that will captivate your imagination will be the ruins of the old church, and the much smaller church built inside this formation. Walking towards the Sea it will soon become apparent that this is an area that has seen massive 'coastal erosion' from the power of the sea. TAKE CARE AS THE CLIFF FALLS REGULARLY. As you face the sea, Benacre Broad is a short walk to you left, with a wealth of both freshwater birds and sea birds to be found, sitting for a time in the hide provided, you may witness some of the reserves wildlife.
