Dunburgh / Boathouse Hill - Approx three and three quarter miles

Starting from the large car park near Beccles quay, walk alongside the cut, where rowing and motor boats are moored, towards the small footbridge. Cross the footbridge turning right and then left into Fen Lane, walking past the 'Loaves & Fishes' to the main road. Turn right and cross the ancient Beccles bridge over the river.

Cross the road, and take the narrow footpath entrance at the side of the bridge, on the Norfolk bank of the river towards Beccles Church. TAKE GREAT CARE WHEN CROSSING THIS ROAD, TRAFFIC CAN SURPRISE YOU. Follow the footpath signs for approximately one-and-a-half miles, you will witness some lovely scenery of the Northgate area of Beccles, and superb views of the Church. When you enter the trees at Dunburgh, after a right and a left turn you come to a footpath junction. Here turn right uphill to a small gate on the road.

Turn right as you enter this small road, follow the road which bends a few times. On the left hand side, opposite some farm buildings (Manor House Farm) on the right, is a track alongside a field, with a narrow footpath alongside between two high hedges. This narrow path can sometimes be overgrown, in which case take the track alongside the field.

At the end of the path you enter a lane with some houses in the distance. Not far along the track look for a footpath to the right with a narrow sleeper-type bridge over a ditch. Follow this path until you come to the road. This is Gillingham. Continue straight ahead and walk along footpath to the junction with the main road.

Cross carefully over this road, turn right here and follow the footpath over the Gillingham dam, back to Beccles, over the Beccles bridge, round by the Quay and back to your car.

On this walk you will witness lovely riverside views of parts of Beccles, during the summer season there will also be pleasant river traffic to see. Wildlife may be seen through a variety of wild birds, the odd Heron and ducks or Swans.
