The River Waveney is a most integral part of Beccles, and is
often thought of as the forgotten element of the renowned Norfolk
Broads. The river is also a natural county border, for whilst
the town of Beccles is in the county of Suffolk, the far banks
of this stretch of the river brings you into the county of Norfolk.
Those
navigating the river to Beccles will join the broadland water
just inland from Oulton Broad, and will soon realise that it
is a most pleasant stretch of the waterways. It is approximately
a one and a half hour journey to the town of Beccles from the
Oulton Broad area. Once reaching the quayside area of Beccles
(a most attractive area in its own right) it is common to spend
time in the town, or visit its fine Pubs and Restaurants
The
stretch of the River beyond Beccles, to the small village of
Geldeston is a delight to behold. Moving slowly past the Northgate
area of Beccles you will witness the fine town houses and their
splendid gardens stretching down to the waters edge. A superb
view of the marvellous St Michaels Church provides a wonderful
spectacle from the river as you begin to leave the town in the
Geldeston direction. Once at Geldeston there are two refreshment
outlets, the wherry and the Locks public houses.
Sailors
must take note however of the ancient low projectory Beccles
Bridge as you sail from the Beccles Quayside towards Geldeston.
At high tide many a craft has been stuck under this Bridge,
with injury caused to individuals from time to time.
