Visitors to Beccles Quay can obtain access by various routes;
From
the Beccles By-Pass, turn into George Westwood Way, near to
Safeways Supermarket at the Roundabout. Then turning right at
the Common Lane junction, turn right again at the 'Chris Bassey-Fisher'
car showroom. This leads round to the Quay. From the Town Centre,
starting at the St Michaels Church, go down the hill into Northgate
Street, continue down this ancient street where you will find
the Quay at the very end. From the village of Gillingham, you
may enter the quay via the route over the Gillingham Dam towards
Beccles. You will come to the small Beccles river crossing bridge.
Once over the bridge, turn almost immediately left, and you
have arrived at the quay. Parking is limited at the Quay side
itself, and is short term. There is a large Car Park as you
move along the narrow road to your right as you face the quay.
The park entrance is almost immediately opposite the 'Travis
Perkins' warehouse.
Beccles
Quay attracts visitors of all ages, it has a small shop, well
established tourist information centre with public toilets opposite
the tourist centre. The 'Loaves & Fishes' public house provides
refreshments daily.
NOTE:
The area of the quay may become water-logged during high tides
or periods of heavy rain, this is quite normal through the winter
months.
Across
the small footbridge, you will find an adequate children's play
area, and the access under the large fly-over bridge to the
Marshland Trail Walks.
NOTE:
Throughout the Quay area you will find a number of litter bins
for your use, PLEASE use them.
During
the first week of August each year this area becomes very congested
as it is the focal point of many of the renowned Beccles Carnival
events, culminating in a spectacular Firework display on the
final evening.
