For generations people have enjoyed the vast open spaces of
the towns common area, it is a relaxing place to walk, take
the children to the play area, or watch the wildlife and cattle
as they slowly enjoy the setting.
The
common today is also home to the Beccles Golf Club, maintaining
their greens with loving care, but it is an area with its very
own history.
In
Victorian times the 'Butts' at the back of the common were developed
for the use of a firing range, and it is thought by some people
that the pit immediately in front of the Golf Club could well
have been the spot that the earth was moved from to form the
'Butts'.
In
the 1800's Horse Racing was regularly held on the common, usually
early in August each year, either the week before or week after
the Yarmouth Races
